Surgical assistant

Additional responsibilities include the provision of organizational, communication and assistive skills necessary to facilitate the flow of surgical service activities. These responsibilities include provision of maintenance of instruments, sterility process and support of resources to patients, visitors, physicians, staff and ancillary personnel. Responsible for the maintenance of surgical supplies, order entry functions, and orientation/training of new personnel and collaboration with the healthcare team towards achieving fiscal and quality care goals and of outcomes for the divisions within surgical services. The position also supports the Manager and Director of Surgical Services in the implementation of surgical service activities.

Examples of duties include:

  • Communication to facilitate patient care delivery and unit efficiency
  • Performs any task included in Surgical Assistant I job description
  • Assists coworkers in patient care delivery
  • Knowledge of instrumentation and its use
  • Completes any documentation of any care given
  • Assist with instruments and supplies for surgery schedule
  • Maintain current/accurate unit information
  • Performs quarterly monitors for event related sterilization using list checks and stock rooms
  • Helps open designated supplies for cases under supervision
  • Support staff cross-training
  • Assists with or does preps as directed under supervision following proper P&P’s
  • Scrubs and holds retractors or acts as 2nd scrub under supervision as assigned
  • Assists with picking cases as time permits
  • Able to independently take call on a rotation basis.

 

This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of AHMC Anaheim Regional Medical Center and AHMC. Qualifications:

  • Education/Training/Experience
  • One year of health care experience in comparable setting. In lieu of this experience, consideration will be made for staff with strong education and associated experiential background.
  • Knowledge of sterility standards, AAMI and AORN
  • Knowledge of aseptic technique
